Many die casting projects lose weeks in repeated quote revisions. The root cause is usually incomplete RFQ input, not supplier response speed.
This template gives procurement and engineering teams a practical RFQ structure that improves quote accuracy and shortens sourcing cycle time.

What a Complete Die Casting RFQ Should Include#
1. Technical Package#
- 3D model in STEP format.
- 2D drawing with GD&T and critical dimensions.
- Leak-tightness requirement if applicable.
- Surface finish and cosmetic class expectations.
- Material preference (for example ADC12 or A380).
2. Volume and Program Plan#
- Prototype quantity.
- Pilot build quantity.
- SOP monthly demand and annual run rate.
- Program life and EAU forecast.
Without volume context, suppliers cannot optimize tooling strategy or unit economics.
3. Quality and Validation Requirements#
- Required capability targets for critical dimensions.
- Sampling plan and acceptance standard.
- Need for X-ray, CMM, CT, or leak test.
- PPAP level and documentation deliverables.
Reference process: Die casting factory CMM and X-ray inspection.
4. Commercial and Logistics Terms#
- Preferred Incoterm.
- Packaging standard and labeling rules.
- Payment terms and currency.
- Destination and freight mode assumptions.
This prevents quote gaps that appear only at PO stage.
Standard Quote Output You Should Request#
Ask each supplier to return the same structure:
- Tooling cost split by die set, inserts, and fixtures.
- Unit price at different annual volumes.
- Separate line items for CNC, surface treatment, and inspection.
- NRE assumptions and validity period.
- Lead-time chart from RFQ to SOP.
Uniform quote format makes supplier comparison much more reliable.
Common RFQ Mistakes That Increase Total Cost#
- Sending only a 3D model without critical tolerances.
- No clarity on leak-tightness or pressure-test requirement.
- Asking for price before agreeing DFM boundary conditions.
- Omitting expected annual volume and lifecycle demand.
To reduce these risks, pair the RFQ with an early DFM review: Cost-down DFM design for die casting molds.
